You wonder sometimes, when you have time – which is seldom, because you’re busy and you try to stay that way - if there was ever a point when you could have changed her mind.

There must have been – a chance to talk, just talk, to say what you could about stability, order, not tearing down the code that keeps the Empire safe – but if there was, it passed you by, and you never noticed. That was your mistake, and that makes it your responsibility to fix.

You had to beg your commander for this mission, but when you did, they understood. You might be more used to auditerrifying than hunting rebels, but you know her strengths, her weaknesses. She’s dogged, which makes her predictable. She can hunt down the smallest lost scrap of information, that one case-closing detail; you can take a net of scattered data points and see the sense they make. She’s better with the law; you’re better with the blade.

(She’s ticklish. She falls asleep with her strut pod covers still on. Every hairbrush she owns, she will eventually lose. She’s got a cluster of tiny teal freckles on one shoulder, and when you bite them, she squeaks and blushes.)

This time, when you confront her, you won’t retreat or look away. You intend to fight as legislacerators do – to the death, with no remorse. Maybe you intend to win.

You don’t like being unsure of things. That’s one of your weaknesses, and one not even the steadiest eyeliner or the sharpest suit can compensate for. And as you sit in the shuttle and wait for the drop, checking your weapons, your briefing, your makeup on a compulsive schedule, there’s one thought that comforts you: she’s braver than you are, and she has never, ever fought to lose.
