You understood him.

You’ve known the teeth of hunger, too. You’ve felt them scrape the bone.

You can’t condemn, and he wouldn’t accept forgiveness, so you gave him what you could instead: tea to quell the cold, smoked fish and biscuits for the emptiness he carried. You know how much more he wanted, and how little he ever asked. A warm, quiet place. The lamp turned a little brighter. You like to think it mattered, that light in darkness, for a little while at least. But he’s done with wanting, now.

Wherever it is, wherever it ends, you hope his soul is lighter.
