“I thought there was nothing left of you,” Pyrrha said. She wasn’t speaking to either of them in particular, and both of them answered, not quite in tandem.

“This is a dream,” Camilla said, in her calm, clear voice, and Palamedes echoed, “You’ll wake.”

It was no surprise. Why else would she be here, occupying a white wicker couch in a garden, on a farm, on a planet that hadn’t been truly alive in a span of years so great her mind recoiled from it. A myriad, they called them now. A myriad of myriads, but she still remembered the green scent of morning after a night of rain, and the heat of a steaming mug between her palms. The good kind of pain. Cam-and-Pal, Pal-and-Cam, sat on either side of her, bracketing her in their warmth. Something rustled in the leaves outside the perimeter, but the shadows, dark and hungry though they were, didn’t feel unfriendly. Whatever was hunting out there, it wasn’t hunting her.

“While it lasts, then,” she said, and lifted the mug to her lips, wondering whether she’d wake with a burned tongue. The others drank with her. Pal grimaced at the taste; Cam smiled and took another, slower sip.

They’d confirmed nothing, those ghosts of hers. Denied nothing. She’d wonder about that later, when hope and grief were old enough not to sting so much. For now, she thought only of coffee, brewed the way she liked it, strong and dark and so, so sweet.
