Candy Hearts Letter (2023)

Dear Candy Hearts creator,

First of all, thank you for writing for me! I love all my requested fandoms and ships, and I’m excited to read whatever you come up with. I have a lot more prompts for Homestuck, because there are a lot more possible ships to sign up with in that fandom, but I adore Fallen London and Sunless Sea, so don’t let the length of each section fool you.

Prompts are intended as a source of inspiration, and if you’ve got an idea that doesn’t follow any of them, I encourage you to run with it. If your interpretation of any of the ships or characters differs from my own, I encourage you to write them as you like. Finally, feel free to take any of my likes as a prompt all on its own, even if I don’t mention anything about it in my fandom-specific prompts.

I love less common POVs and formats (for example, first person, second person, non-chronological, a series of linked drabbles), and I’d be happy with any rating from G to Explicit (including smut) and any tone from fluff to darkfic. I’m open to character death, graphic violence, and sad or bittersweet (but preferably not utterly hopeless) endings. I’m also open to crossovers among any of my requested fandoms. Finally, while longer fic is great too, I really love shortfic, so don’t hesitate to write me something at or near the word limit.

(Click on each statement to expand.)

Overall likes and DNWs
Overall Likes: Location-based horror, fantasy, or mystery (for example, abandoned ruins, strange landscapes, eldritch architecture) ∙ Worldbuilding, including the little mundane details of daily life in fictional places ∙ Fictional gods and belief systems ∙ Small character moments ∙ Slice of life ∙ Survival in difficult circumstances ∙ Small moments of peace in the midst of danger or hardship ∙ Characters who are used to going without something (food, kindness, physical contact, a chance to rest, etc.) receiving it ∙ Gradually-earned trust ∙ Unexpected kindness or mercy ∙ Redemption, including ways in which redemption is complicated or difficult ∙ Characters fighting against doom, fate, and/or impossible odds, and maybe winning ∙ Mutual loyalty ∙ AUs of the following types: canon-divergence, role swap, urban fantasy and/or futuristic fantasy, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic ∙ Ghosts ∙ Vampires

NSFW likes: Character-focused sex ∙ Non-penetrative sex ∙ Body worship ∙ Xeno ∙ Hand-kink and/or glove-kink ∙ Clothing kink (for example, rich fabrics, soft or pleasant textures, outfits with emotional significance) ∙ Sensory play (for example, focus on textures or temperatures, sensory deprivation) ∙ Bathing or showering together ∙ Consensual but non-formal BDSM-related kinks (for example, bondage or impact play), not necessarily all at once ∙ Consensual voyeurism/exhibitionism ∙ Kink as something influenced by or used to explore a character’s not-necessarily-inherently-sexual fears, desires, or emotions ∙ Feel free to include kinks not listed here as long as they don’t show up in my DNWs.

Do Not Wants: Rape/non-con between requested pairings. ∙ Sexual content involving characters aged 14 or under at the time the fic is set (future-fic set when they’re older is totally fine) ∙ Requested pairings being contemptuous of each other (I like even adversarial ships to view each other with mutual respect) ∙ Modern mundane AUs ∙ A/B/O. ∙ Rimming, anal fingering, or lots of focus on penetrative anal sex ∙ Watersports or scat ∙ Sounding ∙ Infantilization, age regression, and/or age-play ∙ Pregnancy or fic with heavy focus on raising children, except where requested or canon-compliant ∙ Racekink ∙ Fic based on real world bigotry or atrocities ∙ Serious real world illness, except where canon-compliant (fictional illnesses are totally fine, even as a major focus)

Fallen London

Fandom-Specific Likes: Canon-typical horror, wonder, humor, Neathy weirdness, and Neathy worldbuilding in London and outside it – I love how strange the lore can get, and the possibilities offered by the uncertainty of time and space and physical reality (but don’t feel like you need to know every obscure detail of the lore to write something I’ll enjoy!) ∙ Dreams and dreamlike imagery; Parabola; cats and snakes ∙ Underdog characters (e.g., the Urchins, the Rubberies, the Clay Men, the rats) ∙ The zee, in all its danger and beauty ∙ The horror elements of Light Fingers, especially the architectural horror of the dream Orphanage ∙ The Correspondence and the Discordance

Fandom-Specific DNWs: Seeking Mr Eaten’s Name and anything connected to it. I have no objections to the kind of dark subject matter explored in SMEN. I’s that specific storyline I DNW.

Hephaesta/The Pirate Poet

I’m interested in Light Fingers as a story of disparate people finding each other and bonding under difficult and very strange circumstances, and I love the Pirate Poet and Hephaesta’s rapport – but at the same time, their instant connection is built on Hephaesta’s artificial infatuation with the zee, which will fade, and I’m curious about the journey from that infatuation to a more real and grounded love for a person, when that person is a zailor and loves the zee for real. Does Hephaesta come to realize that she’s started to feel some of that true love herself when the moon milk wears off, or is the zee a point of divergence (or even conflict?) between them? How does it end – setting out to zee together, or with Hephaesta as the Pirate Poet’s girl (well, strongwoman) in port, or with an amiable parting, or some other way entirely?

A few other prompts:

- Parabola changes everything it touches, and it’s changed both of them
- Dealing with some of the difficulties and dangers of living in the world of dreams – possibly (but not necessarily) including the Boil of Calamities, who is still out there and, depending on your choices, might have very good reason to be angry
- I’d love to know the details of some of the Pirate Poet’s stories and/or shanties; Alternately, or in addition, Hephaesta has some stories of her own to tell, and the Pirate Poet gets a chance to enjoy listening
- Hephaesta reading the poems on the Pirate-Poet’s body, and perhaps inscribing one of her own
- Smut is welcome, and could work well with any kind of tone – gentleness and reverence, intensity, melancholy, playfulness – but I’d love some attention to the xeno elements of the Pirate Poet being clay, and I think something could be done with the fact that both of them are hardy, resilient, and probably the strongest partner the other has ever had.

Sunless Sea

Fandom-Specific Likes: I love the atmosphere of this game – that combination of evocative, sometimes startling beauty and lonely darkness, the precariousness and consequent importance of warmth, light, food, safety, company. Conversely, the horror and survival elements of the game too – terror, cannibalism, unseen threats and dangerous temptations in the dark or beneath the zee’s surface, and the equal and opposite threat of too-fierce light. I love all the ports and islands – Frostfound, Irem, Whither, and Gaider’s Mourn are favorites – and I’d love any exploration of aspects of them we didn’t get to see, or an entirely new port or island with new threats or wonders. The Gods of the Zee also intrigue me, and I’d love anything focused on them.
Fandom-Specific DNWs: The Seeking-related aspects of the game (the Chapel of Lights, Mr Eaten references). I don’t mind loss of mind or consumption of crew, but these events should stay Name-unrelated.

Maybe’s Daughter/Zee-Captain(s)

Any gender of Zee-Captain would be great here.

Maybe’s Daughter is one of my favorite characters in this game. She’s playful, sneaky, audacious, and maybe a little dangerous, but as the game says, She's serious once she gets talking. There's hard edges under the bluff and banter. Regarding her relationship with the Captain, I love how what she feels for them seems to be attraction, camaraderie, and real fondness, but not romantic love – which might change, but then again, might not. Stolen moments of pleasure in the darkness and danger of the zee don’t mean you’re in love but not being in love doesn’t make those stolen moments meaningless. And I love that there’s more to her and her story than the Captain ever really gets to see in-game. I’d love to see more about her relationship with Parabola and anything to do with her tigerish side, and also curious about this, re: her mother: We've never met. So we were never close. But I'm not close to many people. Honestly, I think that's her fault: I think she sold something of what I was.

Which: what? What was sold, exactly, and to whom? Does she ever get it back?

Other prompts:

- Maybe’s Daughter is kind of a thief. Does that ever get her into more trouble than she can get out of on her own? Or does she ever use those skills to get the Captain out of trouble?
- Maybe’s Daughter has some really complicated feelings about stories, and love, and especially love stories. How does that play into her trysts with the Captain?
- Does she ever leave, as it seems like she’s inevitably going to? Or does she choose to stay? If so, what convinces her?
- Nightmares are common at zee. Can a Parabolan officer protect against them? If so, is there a price?

Homestuck

Fandom-specific likes: Anything to do with the Game. I love that weird, melancholy, mythic atmosphere of early-canon SBURB/SGRUB, the bizarre game mechanics, the d00my apocalyptic feel and perhaps characters defying or rejecting it ∙ Anything to do with classpects and powers, including ways that these things might manifest or be reflected in a character’s life even outside the game ∙ God Tier being reinterpreted in a more mythic way than canon (or just an AU with characters as gods) ∙ Friendships among the characters; goofing off together, being ridiculous nerds, light-hearted teasing, banter and puns ∙ Helmstrolls, especially of the rogue, vengeful, and/or rescued variety, but also: characters willingly becoming helmstrolls for the sake of the rebellion or as a positive (or at least not wholly negative) thing post-overthrow of the Empire; consensual but emotionally-fraught helmstroll kink and/or things that replicate aspects of the experience ∙ Any troll (especially Karkat or Feferi) wrestling with their Ancestor’s legacy ∙ Alternian worldbuilding, from the ridiculous to the poignant or horrific

Fandom-specific DNWs: Epilogues or H^2 canon, with the exception that you are welcome to include June Egbert and trans guy or nonbinary Roxy if you choose ∙ Evil or tyrannical Feferi, or implications that she will inevitably become so.

Prompts for any ship in this fandom:

- Alternian rebellion AUs. I love them. Give me all of them.
- Space pirate and/or space fugitive AUs: the characters manage to escape on a ship together, and now they’re trying to hide and survive in a dangerous galaxy.
- Characters as gods (or gods and worshippers), in the rebuilt world or an AU.
- I’d love to see versions of the new universe that diverge from what the comic’s ending and the Epilogues give us

Aradia Megido/Vriska Serket (Homestuck)

What I love about this ship: All that shared history and intense emotion – betrayal, loyalty, the kind of hate that wraps right around to love, the kind of protectiveness and possessiveness that includes (but is not limited to) nobody is allowed to hurt you but me, and only in ways you want. I love how they counterbalance each other and provide each other the impetus to not give up on things that matter, like life, and being a better person than you were, and being angry. And of course, I am always, always here for kinky smut for these two.

Some other prompts:

- Playing games with high stakes
- One of them goes too far in some way and faces the consequences; alternately, one of them recognizes that they’re about to go too far and makes the choice to step back from that
- One or both of them defending the other against or rescuing the other from some greater threat
- The two of them as equal and opposite cosmic forces
- Something that looks like a loss and turns out to be a victory
- Something that looks like a betrayal but isn’t
- Caliginous courtship gifts
- What can be forgiven? What can’t be?

Feferi Peixes/The Psiioniic | The Helmsman (Homestuck)

What I love about this ship: there are so many directions you could take it in, and so much potential for emotionally fraught interaction between two good people, one of whom has a hell of a lot of good reasons not to trust or want anything to do with the other. If Psii starts out suspicious, how and why does that change? If he doesn’t, what are the circumstances that allow him to be willing and able to trust and like Feferi from the beginning? Or, if you want to jump ahead to a scene or story where they’ve made it through that process already, how do they interact now, and what kind of balance have they found with each other?

Some prompts:

- Feferi’s the new Empress, and Psii’s the cynical advisor willing to challenge her. Or: Feferi’s not the new Empress, because she’s trying to make this democracy thing work, and she needs some help from an old, old rebel who is beginning to believe she might actually mean it
- Feferi is a prisoner about the Condesce’s ship, and that ship, despite himself, is starting to care about what happens to her
- Feferi being there with Psii as he adapts to life as not-a-ship – whether that’s the difficult side of adaptation, like suddenly being small, limited, disconnected, and/or stuck in a body that’s maybe still hurt, or the positive side, like peace and quiet, freedom, small pleasures, self-determination
- If you love somebody, set them free (maybe they will, eventually, come back to you)
- The stars look different from down here
- If you feel like writing something kinky, I’d love to see something where Psii’s got a difficult relationship to sex or physical contact, but he likes (consensually) domming her from a distance – for example, psionics, bondage/restraint, the kind of dynamic that’s all about willing surrender of power and reclamation of control

Sollux/Karkat

What I love about this ship: How well they know each other, how much they trust each other and how much of a constant they’ve been in each other’s lives, and how despite all their conflicts and mutual trolling they’re fast friends and nothing’s going to change that (even if they don’t always believe it). They’ve seen each other at their worst and their best, and they might poke ruthlessly at each other’s insecurities (and their own by proxy), but they’ll also keep each other’s dangerous secrets and fight to defend each other… or just waste several hours being complete dorks together, as one does.

Some prompts:

- Sollux remains on the meteor. What changes? What stays the same?
- Karkat bleeds in front of Sollux for the first time. How does that go? How did it happen to begin with?
- Alternately, alive or half-ghost Sollux finds his way back to the recreated Eartn Post-Game. (Or maybe both of them do. How is Karkat going to deal with two Solluxes?)
- The two of them as adults hiding in plain sight in the Empire. Something where they might have survived Ascension, but they still have a lot to lose if Karkat’s mutation or Sollux’s psiioniics are revealed. This could be a good setting for anything including domesticity, mission-fic, hurt/comfort related to the pressures and dangers of survival, something where one of them has to think fast to keep the other safe, or any other idea.
- Helmsman Sollux. Maybe willing, for the sake of the Rebellion. Maybe rescued. Maybe doing the rescuing.
- Karkat finally successfully programs a virus. Maybe this is just a long-awaited chance to wipe that smug look off Sollux’s face. Maybe the stakes are higher.

The Psiioniic | The Helmsman/The Signless | The Sufferer (Homestuck)

What I love about this ship: Shared history, this time with a looming sense of tragedy that makes the good moments all the more precious. But also, the possibility of a kinder ending for one or both of them, either in an AU, in the afterlife, or after some kind of post-Game resurrection. Also, one thing that intrigues me about the Ancestor era is the expansiveness of it – Alternia feels like a big dangerous world that’s only partially under the Condesce’s control, and I’m fascinated by the weird mishmash of futuristic and fantasy-medieval, so I’d love anything with that kind of atmosphere.

Some prompts:

- Psii is kind of a doom prophet. He knows following Signless will end badly. He decides to do it anyway. Why?
- Body worship, emphasis on the worship – either before their rebellion falls apart, or after, when they’re both tired and wounded and at least one of them is back from the dead
- Sharing a moment of physical comfort – bathing together, sharing food, sharing touch, sleeping together (as in literal sleep) in a safe place
- We know the outline of Psii’s backstory, but not the details – I’d love to see those filled in
- Despite the obvious Christ-figure parallels, I’m interested in ways Signless’s philosophy or story might diverge from or be alien to Christianity, so… anything involving the role of specifically Alternian myths/rituals/belief systems in these characters’ lives would be awesome
- One of them gets a chance to change the future, or the past. Do they take it? Is there a cost?
- The Ancestors play SGRUB
